Gulumpe placed under curfew amid chieftaincy tensions

The Ministry of the Interior has imposed a curfew on Gulumpe and surrounding communities in the Kintampo North Municipality of the Bono East Region, effective 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. daily “until further notice.” The action, taken on the advice of the National Security Council and by Executive Instrument, follows heightened tensions linked to a chieftaincy dispute. Residents have been urged to exercise restraint and support measures aimed at restoring calm.

Under the order, authorities announced a total ban on carrying firearms, ammunition, or offensive weapons. The directive also prohibits two or more persons riding on a motorbike and the wearing of war regalia, with violations subject to arrest and prosecution. These restrictions accompany the night-time curfew to reduce the risk of clashes and help security agencies keep the peace.

Background/context:
Ghana has a long-standing framework for managing localised conflicts through curfews, mediation and targeted restrictions. Similar measures have been applied in recent weeks in other hotspots, including a renewed curfew in Binduri in the Upper East Region. While curfews are disruptive to daily life, officials typically argue they are time-bound tools to stabilise volatile areas, protect lives, and create space for dialogue by traditional and civic leaders.

The Interior Minister, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has also highlighted broader security concerns in northern Ghana, warning that threats of violent extremism from the Sahel make vigilance and community cooperation essential. He called for collective action—across government, traditional authorities, faith groups and civil society—to tackle conflict drivers such as unresolved chieftaincy disputes and youth unemployment.

Residents in and around Gulumpe are encouraged to comply with the curfew and the special restrictions, report suspicious activity to the police, and avoid gatherings that could escalate tensions. The Ministry says it will review the measures based on the evolving situation and progress toward lasting resolution through established conflict-management channels.
