Ghana to open digital skills doors with Girls‑in‑ICT training push

The Ministry of Communications, Digital Technology & Innovations of Ghana has kicked off the 2025 edition of its “Girls‑in‑ICT” programme in the Upper West Region, aimed at equipping young women with digital skills and positioning them for future employment in tech‑driven sectors.

Globally and in Ghana, women remain under‑represented in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields. Ghana has made commitments to closing this gap, including national digital agendas and dedicated training initiatives. The Girls‑in‑ICT programme brings together the government, tech hubs and educational stakeholders to deliver training in coding, robotics, digital literacy and innovation mindset in remote and underserved areas. The recent launch in Upper West comes amid the ministry’s broader efforts: inauguration of the new board for the National Communications Authority (NCA) and a national privacy‑awareness campaign.

Programme highlights:

  • Hundreds of girls from senior high schools and upper‑primary levels are enrolled in workshops covering basic coding, website/ app‑design and career mentoring in tech fields.
  • Local tech hubs and private sector firms are providing mentors, equipment and resources to make the training practical and locally relevant.
  • The ministry emphasised that digital‑skills creation isn’t just about coding — it’s about building the pathways for future jobs in Ghana’s tech ecosystem, from fintech and agritech to AI and data centres.

Why this matters:

With the digital economy growing in Ghana, skills shortages in tech threaten to limit domestic innovation, foreign investment and job creation.

Empowering young women in digital skills helps bridge gender gaps, lifts household incomes and ensures more inclusive national growth.

Ghana’s agenda to become a regional digital‑hub depends on cultivating local talent — programmes like this help build the next generation of tech‑leaders.
