DStv in Ghana: new packages promise up to 50% more value
Ghana’s Communications Ministry announced that new DStv packages took effect on October 1, promising 33–50% more value depending on bouquet. The move follows weeks of talks among the Ministry, the National Communications Authority (NCA), MultiChoice Africa and MultiChoice Ghana. The company has since clarified the upgrades align with the joint announcement and are not limited to only a short trial period
Why it happened
The rollout caps months of regulatory pressure to improve affordability in Ghana’s pay‑TV market. In August, authorities even threatened licence suspension if prices didn’t reflect local economic conditions. While the government leaned on consumer‑protection grounds, MultiChoice sought a compromise that preserved service quality. The result: richer channel line‑ups and features at the same price points, rather than across‑the‑board fee cuts.
Background
The NCA engaged MultiChoice in September on pricing practices, requesting detailed models. That followed a broader telecoms push for transparency and value in subscription services. Ghana’s pay‑TV space is also being reshaped by changing content rights and competition from streaming, which has forced traditional platforms to sweeten their offers.
What subscribers should do
- Check bouquet details in the DStv app or website to see added channels/features.
- Monitor bills over October–December to verify “more‑for‑same‑price” promise.
- Compare alternatives (satellite and streaming) as competition intensifies.
