Africa CDC launches health manufacturing data hub in Accra

A persistent challenge in Africa’s health sector is dependence on imports for medical supplies, diagnostics, vaccines, and other health technologies. Strengthening local manufacturing and better data visibility have been long‑standing policy goals.

What is AMMINA

During the African Healthcare Manufacturing Trade Exhibition & Conference (AHMTEC) in Accra, the African Manufacturing Market Intelligence & Network Analysis (AMMINA) platform was launched. The platform aggregates data on manufacturers, product portfolios, capacities, and market trends across 18 AU member states, and will expand to all 55.

AMMINA is intended as a public good, aiding policy makers, investors, donor agencies, and manufacturers with transparent, data‑driven insights into Africa’s health manufacturing ecosystem.

Significance & outlook

  • Ghana, as host, can benefit from increased investor visibility in its health and biotech sectors.
  • The platform supports intra‑African trade, helping countries source regionally instead of relying solely on external imports.
  • Success depends on data quality, stakeholder buy‑in, and continuous updating and governance.
  • If well leveraged, AMMINA may catalyze regional industrial clusters, especially in diagnostics, vaccine fill/finish, and active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs).
